KEY CONCEPTS in this module

What are expectations?

At work there are a series of ways you are expected to behave.

This includes:

  • What work to prioritise.

  • What relationships to invest in.

  • How to work with your leader.

  • How to communicate with one another.

When we know what’s expected of us, we can meet others' expectations.

When we don’t, we risk letting our team mates down and missing important work.

Why clarify expectations with your team?

In one study it was discovered nearly half of employees were unclear of what was expected of them, and a third experienced a lack of clarity between 1-3 times a day.

We can’t expect our team will necessarily have the tools to clarify expectations.

It’s up to leaders to clarify and reiterate expectations to create a healthy, safe, and productive workplace culture.

To do that, we need to communicate our requirements for our team dynamics, deliverables and cascade need to know information.

What’s a ‘reverse brief’?

A reverse brief is a self managed checklist of what others expect of you. If and when you’re on the receiving end of an unclear instruction, you take responsibility for finding out what your stakeholder needs by asking them.

A great reverse brief makes it clear to both parties what is expected. It also gives everyone clarity on what to prioritise, how to achieve that, and becomes a checklist for success.
