KEY CONCEPTS in this module

WHAT IS ‘BRAND YOU’?

Your ‘brand’ is how you communicate, how you do business and what you’re known for. There are many benefits to communicating your expertise.

These include:

  • Increased visibility

  • Improved relationships

  • Recognition

  • Increased respect

  • Potential opportunities

  • Earning and learning opportunities

Let’s get started.

3P’s of BRAND YOU (quick exercise)

At Happiness Concierge, we believe we can ‘retro-fit’ our brand into what we already do well, and work on what the world doesn’t know about us yet. We call this the ‘3P’s.

  • Profile: what you’re known for

  • Perception: how you are perceived

  • Power networks: who knows you and can advocate for you

BRAND ROLE MODELS (quick exercise)

Ever notice some people are just brilliant communicators? We can use this as inspiration for our own brand!

Think about people that communicate in a way you love. What is it that you admire about them? Is it the way they talk? They dress? This exercise invites you to take this as inspiration and ask, ‘What could my version of this look like’?

‘Why am I not getting the opportunities I want?’

If you are curious about what opportunities are out there … but you find yourself at a loss for why you aren't being considered for them, it’s likely that you have one of three challenges ahead.

You have a credibility problem.

You need to get better at your job or show people what you do well, more often.

Alternatively, you might need to upskill in a certain area to build your competence.

For example, when I started my business, I had a competence problem. I knew what I was capable of, but I didn't have a track record. To fix that, I held free workshops on my own time (and dollar!) to create scenarios where it was undeniable that I created value.

What areas could you amp up your competence? How could you show people what you know?

You have a warmth problem.

You need to work on demonstrating your intent to others.

Alternatively, you need to work on learning what others need, to see your work interactions as positive to them.

For example, I am a high ‘warmth’ person. That sometimes meant people assumed I was all talk and no action. I had to work on showcasing my competence, alongside my naturally warm nature.

What ways could you show your intent, earlier, and more explicitly and effectively in your interactions? Is it written or verbal? Does it include asking more questions of others to understand how they see things, or is it clarifying what you need?

You have a network problem.

You need to have relationships with people who can influence your career prospects.

Those relationships, research has found, need to be positive as a foundation for them to trust you.

For example, when I started my new business I had zero clients. I couldn't sell to people I didn't know. So I had to create demand, first, by showing what I could do.

What does it look like to let people in your network know what you could do? Are these people you already work with? Could it be people they are connected with? What’s the easiest way to nurture a valuable relationship?
