So yesterday we had a big day, and as the team grows, we’re only going to get busier.
.
Sure, I’m tired, who isn’t. I technically work more hours than ever. But I feel energised and pumped AF most of the time.
.
You can work all the time and feel miserable and exhausted. You can also work all the time and feel energised. The difference? You find the outcome of your work personally fulfilling, AND you have the ability to switch off to recharge.
.
Finding work fulfilling is something we’ll come back to later. For now tho, I want to focus on the recharge part because that’s always been the tricky thing for me. I’m bored, tbh, if I’m not working, learning, networking, writing, you know DOING something. But I’ve learned, because my body keeps passing out and getting really sad, that unless I take my medicine (sleep, eat, exercise, talk to good people, socialise), I start feeling miserable AND exhausted, instead of you know, exhausted but happy.

In ‘Beyond Nine To Five: Is Working To Excess Bad For Health’, researchers discovered that workaholics who were engaged with their jobs, showed less signs of poor health than workaholics who were disengaged with their jobs. The takeaway? It was less about working all the time or the number of hours worked, said this report, and it was more about the ability to recharge, AND the mindset around what we believe we’re getting out of work.

So the question becomes, if you’re awesome at switching off, you’re officially my Hero / Heroine, think about what you ARE getting out of your job and how that can actually HELP you get to the next level (whether that’s paying the bills for your mortgage, saving for a family, landing that promotion or learning from your career crush). And if you’re clear about what you’re getting out of your job and feel meh, ask yourself: when is the last time I:
•Saw someone who energises me
•Ate good food •Exercised, moved, stretched, went for a walk
•Went to bed before midnight
.
If you still feel crap, THEN we can talk about work.

Our brief was to help them nail the skills to get noticed, gain credibility within an organisation and learn the skills required for managing more responsibility.

The AHA moments came with role plays on constructive conversations, focussed on giving feedback upwards as well as sideways and downwards. They were asked to address one of three examples: •Your direct report is rolling your eyes in your WIPs.
•Your boss delivers a report to the LT using your insights. They add their insights, which contradicts yours and as a result it sends the wrong message.
•Your team member requests a meeting, then dials in 30 mins late
.
The rule was to use the HC framework: I’ve noticed… the impact was…. ask the person for their take. Have a conversation and get more info. Then, move to a recommendation or suggestion. Example: I’ve noticed you took a call yesterday when we were talking about X. It makes me wonder whether you’re taking what I’m saying seriously.” Then, PAUSE. “What was your take?” That person might share an urgent call, maybe their bosses boss was calling, maybe there was a window to take a VIP call. Maybe … fuck knows. The point is you don’t know unless you ask.

The idea of pausing and seeking a response is when you share something you’ve noticed, and the impact it has, it opens a CONVERSATION. So many of us (myself included), worry about saying the wrong thing, so we say all of the things, and as a result, it’s an annoyed, unclear, passive aggressive, indirect ramble. By sharing “So I’ve noticed when I X, you do X, which gives the impression X. What do you think?” it helps open a convo, and from there we can learn a ton of stuff about what’s going on for our team / colleague / boss, which could help us realise what else is going on for them.

“How did we find this exercise?” I asked. “It was hard”, said one. “I found myself waiting for them to finish so I could get more annoyed.” Another said “it was really insightful. It turned out they [in this fictitious role play] had to take an urgent call from my bosses boss so we both agreed it was the right response.”

Oh and I wrapped an upcoming leaders programme with 12 incredible rockstars at an awesome workplace in #melbourne. Does life get any better than this?!

Tomorrow we’re delivering HC’s Constructive Conversations module in Melbourne, in a custom Communicating With Influence series for a group of up and coming leaders.

I was preparing the presentation and reflected on my own experiences giving and receiving feedback. “It’d be rad to include my own examples of giving and receiving feedback and how it felt”, I thought to myself.
.
On Slack, I messaged a few of my team members. “Would you feel OK if I shared the time when we talked about X? I thought it’d be neat to share real life examples and what we both learned from it.”
.
I sent the Slack message. No immediate response.
.
I panicked. OH GOD WHAT IF I AM A TERRIBLE MANAGER AND LEADER AND THEY SAY FUCK NO BECAUSE THAT’S NOT HOW I REMEMBER IT. WHAT IF I CREATED A PERCEPTION OF HOW THAT CONVERSATION WENT DOWN AND I FABRICATED MY MEMORY OF IT BEING CONSTRUCTIVE.

A few mins later, a Slack notification popped up. “For sure”, said one. “Definitely open to that!”, said another.
.
They say you teach what you most need to learn. And the beauty of this course, you’ll be pleased to know, is, even when I’m writing it, I’m looking at these slides and saying to myself: “whew. practice makes perfect.”

My team continually amaze me. Today’s 1:1 was to map out a client brief on creating high performing teams. Em has invested so much into her own PD making her the perfect talent for this brief, particularly around her own experiences Building Teams in the corporate world. Can’t WAIT to craft a custom training day for this amazing team. 🙌🏽
